Traditional Camp

Camp Alleghany, nestled in the Alleghany Mountains of West Virginia, is the oldest girls' camp in the Virginia's. Rooted in the finest traditions of summer camping, Alleghany's program has been conducted for more than seventy-five years with fidelity to the ideals of her founders. Established in 1922 by Helen Coale Worthington, Camp Alleghany offers a setting as free as possible from the distractions of the outside world and is a place where the standards for success are of proven worth.

Camp's grounds are completely isolated and may be reached only by crossing the Greenbrier River by cable ferry or rowboat operated by the Camp. Campers live in canvas tents situated on top of wooden platforms, which are located along the river.

The Camp is divided into two groups: Junior Camp, ages 8 to 12, and Senior Camp, ages 13 to 16. This makes it easier for campers to interact and bond with each other. The camp directors choose their counselors very carefully. The strong purpose of guiding and encouraging allows Alleghany girls to grow and mature through their experiences at 'Ghany.

In 1963, S. Cooper Dawson, Jr took on the camp traditions. His son, Samuel C. Dawson, III, joined him in 1984. In 1999, Cooper Dawson passed on the camp leadership to Sam Dawson who works to continue the ideals begun by the Worthington's in 1922.

Mini-Camp

Mini-camp is aimed at 7 to 11 year old girls who never been to Camp Alleghany before; indeed, they may never have been to "sleep away" camp. The purpose is to give these girls a taste of what camp is all about. This will help each girl decide if Alleghany is the place for her, while having fun! Mini-camp lasts for one week. Our regular counselors will be teaching classes while tent responsibilities will be taken care of by some of our Alleghany Alums.

So, come join the fun!
