DINING HALL

Our dining hall is a two story building that was built in 1922. It has a roomy, modern kitchen where our meals are prepared for our girls. It is located on the side of a hill well above the river.

THE COTTAGE

Located just down the hill from the dining hall is a two story building housing the summer offices on the first floor. On the second floor are bedrooms used by the Director and his wife, and visitors to camp.

PLAY HALL

The Play Hall is a very roomy building located above the tent area where the campers meet every morning for assembly. It is large enough to hold the entire camp. It has a stage and a green room, and is the location for all drama and dance productions. It has a porch along the lower half of the building, and it is very visible from the tent area.

ARTS & CRAFTS HALL

The arts & crafts building is where all the crafts are kept. It is the first building that a person encounters once they cross the river. It is divided in half by a wall and a single doorway. Sewing, painting, and beadwork are on the side closest to the fireplace while pottery, woodworking, and supplies are on the other. Out side there is an extended roof that covers one half of the building where basket weaving goes on.

COWBELL ALLEY

Next to the arts & crafts building is a four room cinderblock building with rooms for senior staff and the doctor.

HEN HOUSE

This is a small one room building with a porch that is next to the store. It is used for storage for the Store.

STORE/POST OFFICE

Next to the Hen House is the store, which is open to the campers twice every day. Clothing, essentials and soft drinks are sold to the campers. Separated by a wall is the Post Office. Here the mail is sorted for the campers. It is open at noon for the campers to buy stamps.

THE BUNKHOUSE

Located between tents 17 and 18, this is the home and office of the Head and Assistant Head of Senior Camp. It has doors front and back, a ceiling fan, and windows on all four sides.

THE INFIRMARY

Located across the Senior tennis courts from the Bunkhouse is our infirmary. It is divided into three parts. One-third is a room for the nurses sleeping quarters, one-third for an examination room, and locked storage of all medications, and the last third for campers who are too sick to be in their tents. The doctor on site has sick call after breakfast and dinner every day. There is a porch that runs two-thirds of the length of the building. It is a very friendly environment for those who do not feel well.

WILD WORLD/TENNIS/RATTLER/LANDSPORTS

Downriver from the infirmary is a four room building that houses the Wild World department, tennis, The Rattler (camp newspaper) and Landsports. Each has their own room with their respective supplies.

DRY ROOM

Upriver from the infirmary is a two room dry room. The right side is used for storage of camper hanging clothes. The left side is used for storage of mattresses.

SHOWER BUILDING

Upriver from the dry room is our shower building. It is divided in half -- the first half for Senior camp; the second for Junior camp. The hot water is heated by a hot water recovery unit separated by a cinderblock wall at the end of the building.

TENNIS COURTS

There are six all weather tennis courts in the middle of senior camp. There are two more between Senior and Junior camp. There is a basketball court at the end of these tennis courts.

LAVATORIES

Camp Alleghany has two sets of lavatories. There are the "Old Johns" -- non-flush toilets located near the river. And the "New Johns" flush toilets -- divided in half like the showers -- across from the Play Hall.

HICKORY HUT

This building is the summer home of the Head and Assistant Head of Junior camp. It is a roomy building with a ceiling fan and windows around like the Bunkhouse. Attached to it is THE SUGAR SHACK, which is the Junior Camp office.

ARCHERY HUT

Located just beyond Junior Camp is the archery hut, home of the Robin Hood department. All bows, arrows, and other equipment are stored in this building under lock and key. All camper score sheets are kept on file in this building.

COUNSELOR LODGE

Located above the Play Hall is a building with a three quarter porch for the counselors. They may store certain items not allowed on tent row in this building.

RIFLE HUT

Located seventy-yards above the counselor lodge is the home of the rifle department. All firearms, ammunition, and other equipment are stored in this building when not it use. They are twelve firing points on the lower range. Each firing point's target rack is on a rope pulley so that the targets can be reeled in and out. There is no reason any child has to be in front of the firing line. On a hill above the lower range are four firing points for those campers shooting their Distinguished Experts.

CANOEING HUT

This building is located between tents 13 and 14 in Junior Camp. It is a small two room building with room for all paddles on one side and room for first aide kits, and equipment on the other side. There is a canoe dock in the shape of a "T" at the water's edge. All canoes are on various racks on the side of the hill.

PURPLE PALACE

This small building is the "home" of the Junior Counselors. It is where they have their classes each day. On the back side of the Purple Palace is a good sized room used for swimming.

ROPES COURSE

The Alleghany Ropes Course consists of twelve elements located at the far end of the property. They are out of sight and restricted to those using the ropes course.
